The history of the modern Olympics

The Olympics is one of the most anticipated sporting events ever. Almost every country in the world participates in this important event. It is the dream of many athletes to make it to the Olympics. This is important to them because athletes want to compete with other athletes and because the new Winter Olympics draw many new athletes.
To start, the modern Olympics have a rich history. They began in 1896, it was held in Greece, but it was for men only. Later though, women were allowed to play in the games (enchantedlearning.com). Currently there are about twenty-eight summer Olympic sports. This includes tennis, archery, judo, and swimming (Olympics.org). When the Olympics were started back up, three awards were included, first place received a gold medal, second place received a silver medal, and third place received a bronze medal. This custom has continued till today (enchantedlearning.com). Even though the Winter Olympics were not included originally they were later added.
In addition to the Summer Olympics, there is the Winter Olympics. For many people hockey is their favorite sport in the Olympics. This is many people’s favorite sport because it is fast paced and exciting (Olympics.org). The U.S.A. participates in this event and practices it vigorously. Team U.S.A. practices in Colorado Springs, here they prepare for the Olympic Games (NHL.com). Even though the United States has a good team other countries are better. The biggest competitors for the U.S. are Russia and Canada. These countries are good because they are in icy climates (Olympics.org). Since Hockey is so popular, it is likely to stay in the Olympics a long time.
In conclusion, the Olympics have now become one of the most well attended events in the world. The Olympics is likely to last because athletes train and prepare for this event and because the Winter Olympics is adding new sports and bringing in new athletes. The Olympics has been supported by many countries and it is not likely to be banned again.
